Our History

It all started back in the early 1950’s. Stan Houghton Sr., along with his two sons, Stan Houghton Jr. and Dale Houghton, worked their small family-owned operation. Years passed and this small business grew to a well-known subcontracting company operating in multiple states.  The company specialized in the tile-flooring, plaster & stucco, metal stud framing, drywall, and structural steel fireproofing trades.

In 1992, WESTLAND CONSTRUCTION – a commercial based general contracting firm, was born with Stanley Houghton Jr. as president, and Dale Houghton assuming the presidency of Houghton Plaster. Westland Construction has since been providing quality services in Construction Management, CM/GC, design build, consulting, and negotiated projects.

Westland Construction is licensed and bonded.  We have constructed thousands of unique buildings in more than ten western states from Illinois to Alaska, and worked internationally in Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Africa. Our portfolio contains educational facilities, religious structures, office buildings, industrial warehouses, medical facilities, multi-family projects, water parks and recreation areas, financial institutions, municipal projects, and even large residential developments and custom homes.

Westland’s reputation thrives on repeat and high-profile projects because we value the importance of the owner/builder/architect relationship. Our approach has always lead us to successful projects built on time, within budget, and with quality that exceeds industry standards. Because of this, the projects Westland delivers always leave personal and lasting relationships with the owner and owner’s representatives.

GROWTH & EXPANSION

In 2005, Westland was presented the opportunity to complete a few large projects in the Southern Utah area. Since then a local and thriving operation has been established in the heart of St. George, Utah – built to specifically manage our Southwest Division (Nevada, Southern Utah, Arizona, and California) construction industries. Though today Westland employs hundreds of people in multiple locations, each project, no matter the type of building, proximity, or value, receives the same professional attention.

Our Global Impact

  • Kinshasa, D.R. Congo

We're not just helping build buildings...we are building people. Click the icon to see photos from various projects Westland has underway and the difference the Westland team is making with the "Westland Training Program."
  • Suva, Fiji

It may seem like paradise, but building over 6,000 miles away takes proper planning, constant communication, and a terrific team. Click the icon to see some of our latest photos.
  • Anchorage, Alaska

The salmon are running, and so is Westland. With the average winter snowfall of over 75 inches, solid scheduling becomes critical. Click the icon to see photos of the Alaska LDS Temple Expansion.
  • In my experience as a Temple Recorder, it has been a blessing to participate in extensive renovation projects in the Chicago Illinois, Los Angeles California, and Jordan River Utah temples. Each project utilized general contractors with sub-contractors spanning many crafts and disciplines requiring temple recommend holders to perform the majority of the work. When comparing the three experiences, I must say that Westland Construction Company and its president, Stan Houghton, stand clearly at the top.

  • The Helper Junior High School was a remodel of huge proportion. We gave Westland two summers for the work, but they brought their own schedule to the table and completed the work in one summer with no interference to the fall start…Westland has been very honest, able and effective and we would not hesitate to use them again in any future projects.

  • From the LDS Church perspective, we are very concerned about 1. Time, 2. Cost, and 3. Quality. Westland Construction has been very attentive to our concerns and they have helped us bring all projects in under cost and on time.   I recommend Westland as a contractor who will be attentive to your needs and concerns and who will work with you to bring your project to a successful completion.
