On Wednesday, April 27 2016, groundbreaking ceremonies were held at the new Provo High School location at 1300 North Lake Shore Drive.
Kyle Houghton, VP of Business Development for Westland stated, “This is significant project for Westland Construction, allowing us to work with outstanding partners such as Provo School District, FFKR Architects, Calder Richards, Olsen & Peterson, and Ensign Engineering. We are excited for the opportunity to serve the needs of the district and the community in this endeavor.”
Board members, district administrators and Mayor John Curtis addressed the audience, followed by the ceremonial groundbreaking, accomplished with shovels and mini-excavators. Westland and Provo School District also invited parents and children in attendance to turn soil with the shovels and sit in the mini-excavators.
Groundwork has started, in preparation to start on the geo-pier work needed before actual construction can begin. This is the process of drilling into the ground and creating pier that will stabilize the future building during a seismic event.
The final site layout for the New PHS has also been announced. The building will include three, multi-story classroom wings to the east and gym facilities, auditoriums, shops, media center and other rooms to the west, with the main office and entrance located at the south end of the building. All of the athletic fields and stadiums will be located to the west and south of the main building.
Substantial completion is scheduled for mid-2018.
