Westland Construction built the new Anchorage Alaska Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with FFKR Architects as architect. In January 2023, it was announced that the original 11,930-square-foot temple would be replaced by a new temple of about 30,000 square feet, built on the site of the adjoining meetinghouse. Construction began in March 2024 on the 5.4-acre site in south Anchorage, near the foot of the Chugach Mountains. The original temple stayed open throughout, so members never lost access to temple worship. The new temple has a single central tower, two 40-seat instruction rooms, sealing rooms and a baptistry, along with features built for Alaska winters such as heated stairs and a covered entrance. Once the new temple opens, the original will be decommissioned and replaced by a new meetinghouse. The project gives members across Alaska a larger, lasting place of worship built to the Church’s exacting temple standards.
