Westland Construction built the new 45,456-square-foot Auckland New Zealand Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with Walker Community Architects as architect. Construction started in late 2019 and reached substantial completion in November 2024. The temple is a towering landmark along the Auckland Southern Motorway, set beside the historic St Johns Redoubt, a protected heritage site built in 1863. Its steel structure is clad in granite, and its design draws on New Zealand flora, Māori basket weave patterns and local art deco architecture. Kōwhai flowers, pōhutukawa trees and silver ferns appear in the art glass, the stenciled walls and the gold-leaf ceilings. White Calacatta marble floors with green quartzite borders recall the “land of the long white cloud” and New Zealand jade. The grounds hold 250 large trees, including two pōhutukawa saved from a central Auckland site, giving the community a lasting place of worship built to the Church’s high-end temple standards.
